Frequently Asked Questions
-
What's the difference between magnesium Bisglycinate and Magnesium Glycinate?
In short: They’re the same thing. The terms are often used interchangeably in the supplement industry.
-
Will taking Magnesium Bisglycinate in the middle of the day make me drowsy?
Magnesium bisglycinate is well-known for its calming properties, making it a popular choice for those looking to support relaxation and restful sleep. While it’s not a sedative, some individuals may feel more relaxed or slightly drowsy after taking it—especially if taken in the evening or when the body is deficient in magnesium. For that reason, many people prefer to take it at night.
-
Why choose bisglycinate over other forms of magnesium?
It’s well-tolerated, less likely to cause laxative effects, and has superior bioavailability compared to forms like magnesium oxide or citrate.
-
What are the benefits of magnesium bisglycinate?
There are many supposed benefits of magnesium bisglycinate, including but not limited to:
- Stress support
- Improved digestion
- Heart and cardiovascular health support
- Sleep and relaxation support
- Bone mineralization support
- Muscle recovery
-
What is magnesium bisgylcinate?
Magnesium bisglycinate is a supplement that contains both magnesium and glycine. Magnesium bisglycinate contains two glycine molecules to each of the magnesium molecules, and has been shown to support stress responses, healthy digestion, muscle recovery, sleep, and more.
-
Are there any side effects to magnesium bisglycinate?
Magnesium bisglycinate is generally well-tolerated and considered one of the gentlest forms of magnesium, especially on the digestive system. Most people don’t experience side effects, but as with any supplement, individual responses may vary.
In some cases, especially at higher doses, magnesium can cause:
- Mild digestive upset
- Loose stools (though this is less common with bisglycinate compared to other forms like citrate or oxide)
- A sense of relaxation or drowsiness, which is why many prefer to take it in the evening
Love it. Definitely helps with recovery and keep me clear headed.
It is excellent for improving the quality of sleep. My clients love it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Magnesium L-Threonate?
Magnesium L-threonate is a compound formed by binding magnesium to L-threonic acid, a metabolite of vitamin C. This form is designed to enhance the delivery of magnesium and has been shown to effectively transport magnesium ions across lipid membranes, including those of brain cells.
What are the Benefits of Magnesium L-Threonate?
Magnesium L-Threonate may lead to many benefits, including but not limited to:
- Supports normal cognitive function and brain health
- May support memory
- May support sleep quality
- May help mitigate exercise-induced muscle soreness
- May support muscle mass and athletic capacity
- Supports magnesium status

What is Magtein®?
Magtein® is simply the branded form of Magnesium L-Threonate provided in NeuroMag™ Sport. Discovered by scientists at MIT in 2010, Magtein® offers superior bioavailability compared to other magnesium L-Threonate supplements.
When Should You Take Magnesium L-Threonate?
The short answer is: it depends on your goals.
At Designs for Sport, we generally recommend taking Magnesium L-Threonate in divided doses three times per day—once in the morning, once midday, and once in the evening—to support consistent magnesium availability throughout the day.*
However, the timing of NeuroMag™ Sport can be adjusted based on individual needs. For example, if your primary goal is sleep support or evening relaxation, taking a greater portion of the daily serving in the later part of the day or before bedtime may be beneficial.*
As with any supplement, individual responses may vary, and consistency is key.
How Long Does it Take for Magnesium L-Threonate to Work?
In a randomized controlled trial involving 80 adults who self-reported poor sleep quality, participants were given either 1 g/day of Magtein® or a placebo. Subjects completed both mood and sleep quality questionnaires, and those in the Magtein® group experienced greater improvements in both sleep, daytime alertness, and memory over the placebo at days seven, 14, and 21, and six weeks.¹
